Food Pantry Program …In our daily work with families in need in West Oakland, we at Prescott-Joseph had become increasingly aware of the tremendous need for a food pantry in the Lower Bottom of West Oakland.
To fill the increasing gap in food security, Prescott-Joseph Center established the West Oakland Food Pantry. To better serve West Oakland’s approximately 24,000 residents who live below the federal poverty line, each month PJCCE will give support to families who are in need of emergency food and other essential supplies. We are very pleased to announce that LaMel A. Smith has been selected as the new Food Pantry Manager for Prescott-Joseph. LaMel brings a wealth of experience in the food industry and a lot of enthusiasm. In addition to managing the food pantry activities, LaMel will also coordinate the West Oakland Disaster Preparedness Initiative. We are very pleased to have LaMel as part of our team! Previous food banks and pantries have closed (Women’s Economic Agenda Project((WEAP)), Catholic Charities, St. Patrick, Mt. Zion) or are operating marginally. This has left a significant gap in emergency food services for a community that is already depressed with high poverty and unemployment rates.
