Food Pantry Program …

In our daily work with families in need in West Oakland, we at Prescott-Joseph had become increasingly aware of the tremendous need for a food pantry in the Lower Bottom of West Oakland.

Food PantryPrevious food banks and pantries have closed (Women’s Economic Agenda Project((WEAP)), Catholic Charities, St. Patrick, Mt. Zion) or are operating marginally. This has left a significant gap in emergency food services for a community that is already depressed with high poverty and unemployment rates.

To fill the increasing gap in food security, Prescott-Joseph Center established the West Oakland Food Pantry. To better serve West Oakland’s approximately 24,000 residents who live below the federal poverty line, each month PJCCE will give support to families who are in need of emergency food and other essential supplies.

West Oakland
Food Pantry

November brought two food distributions from the Food Pantry.

On Saturday November 18, we gave away 65 free boxes of food to families in West Oakland for our monthly distribution at Holy Trinity Church. Volunteers and staff pitched in to make the distribution a success.

On November 21 and 22, we had a special distribution to families working with the Another Road to Safety program as well as Holy Trinity Church and St. Martin de Porres School, combing for another 17 boxes.

Our total for the two November distributions was 82 boxes.
