PLACE at Prescott School …

Preparatory Literary Academy of Cultural Excellence (P.L.A.C.E.)

(Formerly Prescott Elementary School)

This project will build upon our two successful family support programs at McClymond’s Educational Complex and with Another Road to Safety, a partnership with Alameda County Social Services Agency (CPS). We will replicate the intervention strategy we employ in helping our current families and extend it to serve an additional 20 students and families who seek and/or have need of our services.

With assistance from the PLACE teachers and staff, we will identify students who may have problems at home that are manifest in their classroom behavior and academic work. Like our ARS and McClymonds programs, our focus will be on providing immediate crisis intervention and referrals to longer-term support services, thus assisting families to create a more healthy and stable home environment.

Specifically, these family support services will include:

  • Crisis Intervention: Family-centered intervention to secure the short-term health and stability of the family before introducing other services
  • Referrals to Longer-Term Support Services: Once the family has been stabilized we refer them to services designed to build longer term success. Our referrals will tap into the existing programs in the community with established expertise in areas such as:
    • Longer-term case management, therapy, or marriage counseling

    • Substance abuse treatment

    • Enrollment in health insurance and public benefits

    • Job training and placement in livable wage jobs

    • Parenting skills classes

    • Financial management and literacy training

    • Referrals to housing

    • Computer Literacy Training

  • Support Services for Parents: In order to participate in family support services, parents will be encouraged to become involved in the school

Through this program, we expect to:

  • Extend current intervention and referral services to 20 additional families

  • Provide immediate crisis intervention to 10 students with problems in the home

  • Develop and deliver food and other basic needs for needy families at the school

  • Increase parent involvement at school

  • Reduce absenteeism and suspensions among students struggling to maintain high grades

  • Provide asthma education for children and families with poor asthma management

West Oakland
Food Pantry

November brought two food distributions from the Food Pantry.

On Saturday November 18, we gave away 65 free boxes of food to families in West Oakland for our monthly distribution at Holy Trinity Church. Volunteers and staff pitched in to make the distribution a success.

On November 21 and 22, we had a special distribution to families working with the Another Road to Safety program as well as Holy Trinity Church and St. Martin de Porres School, combing for another 17 boxes.

Our total for the two November distributions was 82 boxes.
